Manos del Uruguay
Manos del Uruguay was created in 1968 to provide jobs for women in their rural hometowns in Uruguay. It is still committed to the same objective and was made a member of the World Fair Trade Organization in 2009. Manos de Uruguay spin and dye their yarns in cooperatives located in the small towns of Uruguay's countryside. Each Manos skein has a tag with the name of the artisan who made it and the cooperative location. The yarns are created in Chunky through to Lace weight. They are hand dyed to produce a rich color pallette with the subtle irregularities which the hand of each artisan gives to it.
Manos del Uruguay is a non-profit organisation that supports local women to make a living while remaining in their local village and raising their families. They are renowned for their fantastic colours, which have become their trademark and have been producing beautiful, natural fibre, hand-dyed yarns since 1968. Their unique, luxurious yarns have been achieved through research and experimenting with traditional techniques over the past 50 years.
| Manos del Uruguay colours are never completely solid but have beautiful nuances and tone variations. Each skein is signed by the artisan who lovingly dyed it, and is labelled with the name of her village. Every skein is unique, no two are exactly the same. Manos combine research and experimentation with traditional techniques and more than 50 years' experience. Their dyeing process uses small dye lots made in pots heated by wood fire or gas.
